Each year, over 2.5 million Americans sustain traumatic brain injuries (TBI) due to terrible falls, traffic collisions, combat situations, assaults, and various sports-related activities. These life-altering injuries often lead to an assortment of physical, cognitive, and behavioral side effects and disabilities. Sadly, most people don’t understand the daily challenges associated with brain injuries, which is why the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is spreading awareness through its Change Your Mind campaign.
Each March, the Brain Injury Association of America kicks off National Brain Injury Awareness Month by introducing a new public awareness campaign. According to BIAA, #ChangeYourMind “provides a platform for educating the general public about the incidence of brain injury and the needs of people with brain injuries and their families.”
The purpose of the Change Your Mind campaign is to:
- Empower people and families living with brain injuries
- Promoting support options and resources that can help people with brain injuries
- Destigmatizing brain injuries
- Raising awareness about the dangers and health concerns associated with TBI
In the time it takes you to count to ten, a person somewhere in the United States has sustained a life-changing brain injury. No matter the cause, this incident will likely affect this person’s ability to hold gainful employment and maintain their prior quality of life. With this in mind, the importance of National Brain Injury Awareness Month can’t be overstated. We may not be able to prevent brain injuries from occurring, but we can promote research efforts, participate in charities, and help in the fight to spread awareness!
