Risk Factors of Aneurysm

Treatment of Aneurysm

A lumbar puncture or spinal tap can also be used in conjunction with an angiography to detect a leaking aneurysm. An angiography is a procedure where a small flexible tube is threaded into one of the brain's arteries, and dye is injected while pictures are taken.

If a leaking aneurysm is detected, treatments include early aneurysm repair with surgery. There are two types of surgery: coiling and clipping. During a surgical clipping, a neurosurgeon operates on the brain by cutting open the patient's skull, isolating the damaged blood vessel and clipping the aneurysm. Coiling is a less invasive approach. In this procedure, a neurosurgeon threads a tube through the arteries, identifies the aneurysm, and fills it with coils. Both procedures can prevent blood from entering the aneurysm, restrict its growth, and prevent further blood leakage.
